Guiding Principle

Where it all began

  • Throughout most of the twentieth century, Chicago has been known as the printing capital of the world. The center of the action was the famed Printers Row District. Just south of Chicago’s Loop, this neighborhood housed printing companies, binderies, paper distributors and typesetters, almost to the exclusion of all else.
  • In 1903 a promising firm called Low & Rider Printers opened its doors in this area. Competition was already tough, but these two enterprising men built their business up. In 1910, Rider bought out Low, and operated the firm as Charles O. Rider Printers. Then, in 1916, Rider formed a new partnership, joining forces with David Dickerson. The business continued to grow, moving to new quarters within Printers Row as equipment, staff and business expanded.
  • In 1937 two new entrepreneurs, Robert E. Madden and Harold C. Salzman, purchased the company but retained its name—which had achieved a valuable reputation. Under the new ownership the company continued to evolve and expand as newer technology proved itself.
  • The company remained within the hands of the Madden family, passing from father to his sons, who were fully committed to staying at the forefront of technology.
  • In 2003 the company changed ownership to Bill Barta who was employed by the Madden family for 17 years. Jim Madden remains on the executive board in an active capacity of sales and consultation.
  • The company has witnessed the growth of the industry and has continued to stay on the cutting edge of technology. As machines continued to come and go one thing remained a constant at Rider Dickerson…the quality of its people. These people have brought the company through 100 years of print communication excellence and continue to provide the same outstanding service and quality that the famed Printers Row of Chicago is known for.
  • March 5, 2007 Rider Dickerson moved to an 85,000 Square foot facility with new state of the art printing, bindery, fulfillment and mailing equipment. The new facility reflects our commitment at Rider Dickerson to continue to be at the cutting edge of our trade.

At that time we installed the fastest, closed loop color, auto plate press on the market, the Heidelberg XL-105 6/c plus coater, 18,000 impressions per hour press. 

  • Early in 2008 an opportunity arose for us to make an investment in SCS (Service Web Offset).  We have since produced several millions of dollars in heat set web printing.  At SCS, we pride ourselves at being able to adjust schedules quickly to accommodate today’s tighter and tighter deadlines.  
  • Six months after that, we elected to embrace Digital the short run printing and variable data technology.  We tested the four major producers of digital presses: Indigo, Canon, NextPress and the IGen.  Our tests led to purchasing the Indigo.  It is great for static short runs and variable data and also for “Multi Channel Marketing."
  • In 2009, our in-plant neighbor’s (Sleepeck Printing) Large format 4/c, 5/c and 6/c with UV 60” to 77” Miehle presses became available.  We couldn’t resist purchasing them; they are on our premise and print great.
